“A fascinating glimpse into the Appalachian lifestyle of the post-Depression era...Extremely well-researched, well-organized, and pieced together in a smooth package that smartly conveys this interesting tale of Southern domestic unbliss..The soundtrack is fantastic and reminds me of the SONGCATCHER Soundtrack.”

“No other film I have ever seen shows the long-term influence of domestic violence as well as this one does…I hope that people around the country and world will watch this film to the very end, and learn that contrary to what Hollywood horror movies, TV, and the press preach, domestic violence is not exciting but tragic.”
Crime Scene Blog
“A Christmas Family Tragedy is a well-made documentary which tells the haunting tale of a family who most likely had many secrets kept inside their little farm house, secrets which may have led to the terrible events of that day. As the documentary points out, this case offers a lesson that domestic violence is not new, and needs to be identified and handled as quickly as possible to prevent further such tragedies.”
About
Creators
Break of Dawn Productions is based on the unique creative and business collaboration of Matt Hodges and Eric Calhoun. While Matt serves as Creative Director and Eric serves as Business Director, they collaborate on every level of the company. Put another way, Matt is the vision & Eric is the focus.
Company
Break of Dawn Productions got its start in 2003, when Eric Calhoun, an Energy Consultant, produced and funded a series of short films written and directed by Matt Hodges, a professional artist/writer/cabby, after Eric got involved editing Matt’s first feature length screenplay, Stutter Infinity. Hodges and Calhoun created 4 short films between 2003 – 2005, culminating in a well-received film as part of the 48 Hour Film Festival in July, 2005.
In November, 2005, the two were called upon to produce The Tontine, a 28 minute comic book adaptation for film directed by critically acclaimed graphic novelist Scott Hampton (Batman; Gotham County Line, Simon Dark). The Tontine is Faust by way of the Deerhunter, as part of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser franchise, originally appearing in Issue #9 of the classic series.
In April 2006, Calhoun and Hodges officially formed Break of Dawn Productions, LLC to begin work on the company’s first property intended for a commercial audience. "A Christmas Family Tragedy" was completed on time, under budget, & released to the public through self-distribution of DVD’s and theatrical screenings on December 14th, 2006.
The next commercial release from Break of Dawn will be "Justice for the Liberty", which is sheduled to see daylight in 2010.
After that, "Built To Crash" will be released in 2011.
